Meet Dr. Carter

For the past seven years Dr. Carter has been a part-time faculty member at the University of Kansas Medical Center as the orthodontic consultant to the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomaly Team. He serves on this team as an Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the department of plastic surgery.

Community Service

Dr. Carter has been involved with the Boy Scouting program in the metropolitan area for over thirty years. He and his son are Eagle Scouts. He is in both honorary scouting societies – Order of the Arrow and Mic-O-Say. He has been a cubmaster, an assistant scoutmaster, a campmaster, and a scoutmaster for Kansas City’s contingent of scouts that attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree in 1997. He has been the recipient of the Order of Merit by the Heart of America Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Practice Philosophy

Dr. Carter’s practice emphasizes a “hands on” approach to the orthodontic treatment of all of his patients. To maintain the quality of treatment, he sees every patient at each visit. At the chair he will bend and activate all of your arch wires as well as place and repair your appliances himself. He believes that you deserve to have the doctor perform these procedures on you and your family to ensure proper treatment and an excellent result.

Dr. Carter is very involved in his profession. He has been a leader locally and at the national level in dentistry and his specialty.

Dr. Carter has been President of the 5th District Dental Society of the Kansas Dental Association. This district represents Johnson, Lynn, Miami, and Franklin Counties in Kansas. He has also been Committeeman and Dentist of the Year of this same organization. He has been President of the Tweed Orthodontic Study Club of greater Kansas City and of the Kansas Association of Orthodontists.

At the national level Dr. Carter has been President of the College of Diplomats of the American Board of Orthodontists and the Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation of St. Louis. He was National President of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity and of the Interfraternity Council of the American Dental Association.

Dental Education / Teaching

Dr. Carter is a graduate “with distinction” from the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Dentistry. He completed his specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Boston University’s Goldmen School of Graduate Dentistry and in orthodontics from St. Louis University Medical Center Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Carter also earned a Masters of Science in Dentistry in the field of Oral Biology.

Dr. Carter taught graduate and undergraduate orthodontics at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Dentistry for eighteen years as an Associate Professor of Orthodontics. He was the school’s first Director of Predoctoral Orthodontics and also served as a graduate instructor and clinical teacher for the graduate residency orthodontic program.

Dr. Carter’s professional honors include the honorary academic dental society of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Clinician of the American Dental Association, Fellow of the American College of Dentists, Fellow of the International College of Dentists, Samir Bishara Silver Merit Award recipient from the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontists, Earl E and Wilma S Shepard Distinguished Service Award presented by the American Board of Orthodontics and Honorary Dean of St. Louis University.

Dr. Carter is the recipient of the Alan J. Davis Achievement Award by the Alumni Association of the Student Clinicians of the American Dental Association. Dr. Carter is also a twenty-year veteran of the United States Army Dental Corps with the rank of Major. Dr. Carter is a board certified orthodontist that will also serve your adult orthodontic needs with Invisalign and / or traditional clear or stainless steel orthodontic appliances. Dr. Carter is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists, the Academy of Pediatric Dentists, Kansas Dental Association, and Fifth District Dental Society of Johnson County. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member and past National President of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontists.
